Case study – Preventing hospital visits for an individual with complex care needs

We provided specialist nursing care for a young adult with complex health needs to prevent hospital admission whilst a longer-term provider could be sourced. He required support with mechanical ventilation, tracheostomy care, suctioning, seizure management, PEG feeding, bowel management, catheter care, and medication management. We had a core team of nurses to provide continuity and consistency which gave reassurance to his parents.

“The service provided by the Guild allows us to relax in the knowledge that our son is getting looked after by staff highly trained in complex needs.”

Types of complex care at home

Each complex care arrangement at home is different, yet individuals typically have two primary options to choose from to best support the needs of the person receiving care.

Short term care: Supporting existing service provision for staffing shortages, respite, holidays and changes in care requirement. This can be facilitated at very short notice.

Long-term care: A specialised care team works closely with the individual and their family to carefully plan and deliver personalised support. It’s typically needed when someone is no longer able to live independently due to their clinical condition, requiring assistance with some or all aspects of daily life.

What is the cost of complex care at home?

The cost of complex care at home is affected by multiple factors. These include which type of nurses you need for your unique circumstances, how many nurses you need, the length of care and the time of day you require care. Our team will work with you to assess your requirements to offer an accurate estimate.

Who pays for complex care?

In Scotland and Northern Ireland, most complex care is publicly funded by the NHS and social care funding. Other ways that complex care is paid for is through self-directed support, charitable support and private funding options. However, how you will pay for complex care depends on your financial circumstances and if you’re eligibility for support services.

In Ireland, most complex care is paid for through a mix of public and private funding. Similarly to the UK, the amount of public funding is based off whether service users meet eligibility criteria and their income.

How long does complex care at home last?

Each service user’s circumstances are unique and require care for different amounts of time. This could range from weeks to years and in some cases, lifelong care is needed.

During our assessment, we’ll identify your support requirements and build a package of care around your needs.

What needs are considered complex?

There are a range of conditions that are considered complex as they affect a person’s quality of life. Some conditions that require complex care are:

  • Complex childhood conditions, for example spinal muscular atrophy
  • Unstable epilepsy
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Motor neurone disease
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Spinal injuries
