Becoming a nurse in Galway

Education

Entry requirements to study a degree in nursing vary by university, but it usually requires three A-levels, or equivalent qualifications, at Level 3. GCSEs are also expected, including Maths, English and Science.

If you’re studying in the Republic of Ireland, you’ll need a leaving certificate with a minimum grade of H5 in at least two higher-level papers and a minimum grade of O6/H7 in four ordinary or higher-level papers. Accepted subjects include Irish or English, Maths, Science and three other subjects. If you’re looking to study as a nurse in Galway, you could study at NUI Galway or ATI Galway.

Registering as a nurse in Galway

To register as a Nurse in Galway you’ll need to be approved by the NMBI, which is the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland. Before you can secure a job, you will have to apply to the NMBI and pay for the application fees, it usually takes a minimum of six months to be approved.

Degree

To become a nurse in Ireland you must study a degree in nursing – this typically involves studying theory, but also applying learnings to hands-on practical experience in community settings and hospitals.

You will also generally specialise in one of the 4 areas of nursing:

  • Adult nursing
  • Mental health nursing
  • Children’s nursing
  • Learning disability nursing.
